Supporters who have been following the case of 8-year-old Gabriel Fernandez who was tortured and beaten to death, despite multiple visits from DCFS social workers went to court today expecting to hear a Guilty plea from Pearl Fernandez, the mother of the child and Isauro Aguirre, co-defendent in the case. But they opted not to take the plea. Both Pearl and Aguirre are accused of killing the child. Pearl Fernandez and Isauro Aguirre are charged with capital murder in the boy’s death. During today’s proceedings, Pearl had an outburst and yelled at Aguirre .Pearl yelled out to Isauro, “Why are you spreading lies and saying you didn’t kill my baby?” Her outburst was seen as a dramatic ploy by relatives that have been attending court. The Judge said both Pearl Fernandez and Isauro Aguirre will be tried together and all evidence will be used against them The trial has been continued until February. It was hoped that they would enter a guilty plea so that Gabriel’s siblings wouldn’t have to go through the emotional trauma of testifying again and there’s also concern that they could use the court appeals system to drag the case out.
