Lt. Anthony Vairo

Lt. Anthony Vairo has been appointed as the new chief of the San Fernando Police Department, replacing retiring Chief Robert Parks. Vairo will assume his new duties on Friday, March 20.

City Manager Brian Saeki, who announced the appointment, said “I am confident that Chief Vairo will continue the San Fernando Police Department’s strong tradition of serving and protecting the community, while enhancing communication with residents, and business owners.”

Vairo has served the San Fernando community for more than 30 years. While in the San Fernando Police Department, Vairo has worked as a Field Training Officer, Detective (Burglary/Auto Theft Gang Intelligence Unit and Robbery/Homicide), Special Response Team Member, Canine Handler, Watch Commander, Canine Supervisor, Sergeant, and Lieutenant.

Vairo said he plans to address visibility in the community and the department’s overall operation.

“Over the past several years, the department has struggled with decreased staffing levels due to attrition and budgetary constraints. One of my main priorities will be to increase staffing levels and training so we can return to a proactive, not reactive, philosophy,” Vairo said.

“San Fernando is a great community and it has always afforded a great relationship with the Police Department. My goal is to continue that relationship and bridge any gaps there may be with the department and the community.”
