Arleta High School, ArTES, Cleveland Charter High School and the Valley Academy of Arts and Sciences are among the 18 Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) schools given the state Department of Education’s new Gold Ribbon Schools Award for making gains in California’s academic content and performance standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics and Science.

A total of 193 middle schools and 180 high schools throughout the state were recognized by the program, which temporarily replaces the California Distinguished School that was based in part on results from the state’s Academic Performance Index and standardized tests that are no longer used. New assessment and accountability measures are being created.

Elementary schools will receive recognition in 2016,

“Congratulations, to all our Gold Ribbon Schools on their outstanding success,” said Superintendent Ramon C. Cortines. “I’m proud of the students, parents, guardians, teachers, and administrators at each of the schools who made this honor possible.”

“Our Gold Ribbon Honorees are examples of tremendous progress in our district,” added LAUSD board member Mónica Garcia. “These schools demonstrate quality instruction, student-focused environments, and educators who adjust their practice to help achieve academic gains.”
