Birmingham pulled off a stunner by defeating Newbury Park in its season opener. Now the Patriots try to take out another noted Southern Section power when they travel to Notre Dame on Friday, Sept. 4.
The Knights (0-1) should be in a testy mood after blowing a 14-point fourth quarter lead and ultimately losing 41-34 to Oaks Christian of Westlake Village. But Notre Dame may have lost more than a season opener; running back Leo Lambert, who scored two touchdowns, also took a couple of hard head shots, and may be held out of the game.
Nonetheless the Patriots (1-0) — who lost all five of their nonleague games last year — go into Friday’s game with a higher level of confidence after seeing running back Sterling Salguero rushed for 184 yards and a touchdown, and producing a solid defensive effort against the Panthers.
Kickoff is scheduled at 7 p.m., at Notre Dame High.
