It is worth the drive to Boyle Heights in East Los Angeles to see “Drunk Girl (and other stories your mother warned you about becoming),” written by Josefina López, with additional plays written by Rocio Diaz and Libette Garcia.
The production is being presented at CASA 0101 Theater’s Main Stage, located at 2102 East First Street in Boyle Heights on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 5 p.m. through October 18.
“Drunk Girl” is a series of 16 short plays, monologues and sketch pieces exploring the struggles of women to have power over their bodies, their lives and their destinies. The subject matter, which explores physical abuse and recovery, and objectification and societal attitudes, is for mature audiences only.
“Drunk Girl” features nine actors portraying 83 roles, under the direction of three directors — Claudia Duran, María G. Martínez and Elvia Rubalcava.
Josefina López, playwright and producer, is known for tackling tough issues that others avoid.
“As a writer I feel it’s important to bring to light difficult and sometimes controversial subject matters which oftentimes aren’t discussed openly in public. I want to give voice to those who are afraid to speak out and express their inner truths,” Lopez said.
“In my latest work, “Drunk Girl,” I candidly explore the very serious topic of physical abuse. The current scandal surrounding actor Bill Cosby, who is in headlines around the world, has brought the topic of rape to the forefront, and was the inspiration for one of the pieces I wrote in this collection.”
Claudia Duran, producer and a director of “Drunk Girl,” added, “Our goal with this production is to heighten our audience’s awareness in a dramatic and entertaining way about physical abuse, including societal attitudes, objectification, manifested psychological damage and the recovery process for victims.”
“Drunk Girl” is composed of the following productions: “Red Flag Game Show,” “Asking For It,” “Stick-Her,” “Alex – The Self Defense Instructor,” “Unlucky Man,” “I Want You,” “Can Finally Laugh About It,” “A Second Chance,” “Pink Scars,” “Lolita Corazon,” “A Real Man,” “Life Is Not A Fairy Tale,” “Stand Up For Women,” “Devil Inside Her,” “Drunk Girl,” and “Yes, Let’s Have Sex.”
Following the final performance matinee performance at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, there will be a discussion on the subject of physical abuse. Panelists include select members of the cast and production team, along with representatives from the Survivor’s Network of Those Abused by Priests, Alcoholics Anonymous, and the East Los Angeles Women’s Center.
“Drunk Girl” is wonderful theater space and play worth bringing your older teen or the young adult in your family to see. Those under 18-years-of age must be accompanied by an adult.
