San Fernando police have arrested a man they say attempted to enter a residence and kidnap a child., police officials said on Thursday, Jan. 28.

The suspect was identified Thursday, Jan. 28, as Charles Daniel Chiodo, of Sylmar. Along with attempted kidnapping and burglary, Chiodo was also booked for cruelty to a child, battery, vandalism, and violation of a protective order. According to police, Chiodo is the father of a 1-year-old child and had been previously issued a restraining order to stay away from the child and his former girlfriend.

In a statement, police officials said SFPD officers responded to a call from the 1900 block of Seventh Street on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 12:10 p.m. that a man was forcing entry into the residence and attempting to take the child.

The statement said that officers, upon arrival, saw a man leaving the residence with a child, and who immediately went back inside. The officers went inside the residence and confronted the man in the living room, who they said was “agitated and yelling,” and refused to give up the child.

According to the statement, the officers did remove the child from the man and took him into custody. The child was not injured and released to the caregiver who — along with another person in the residence — sustained minor abrasions from an assault the statement said.

Police went on to state that Chiodo has prior convictions for possession of narcotics, burglary, evading police and possession of a weapon.
