More than 200 students from six Valley-area elementary schools, including Haddon STEAM Academy and Pacoima, will participate in a friendly robotics competition this weekend designed to show off their STEM-related skills.

The “Rally in the Valley” takes at Cal State University, Northridge on Saturday, May 7, and will feature Lego Mindstorm robots designed, built and programmed by the students.

Besides Pacoima Elementary, other participating schools include Stanley Mosk and Victory Boulevard Elementary schools, Castlebay Lane Charter, and Haskell Math/Science Magnet. Also competing is Santa Monica Boulevard Community Charter.

Robotics is part of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) curriculum taught at the schools, teaching students high-tech skills that are essential to 21st century careers.

The competition in the university’s Matadome Stadium, Redwood Hall, is from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The championship rounds are tentatively scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
