The Education Commission of the City of San Fernando is presenting scholarship money to twelve recipients from three recent scholarship contests.
Two San Fernando middle schoolers — Oscar Garay from the Mirman School and Peria Contreras of SfiAM Middle School — earned $500 scholarships for their public service announcements created to educate viewers on water conservation. The scholarships were funded by the California Latino Water Coalition (CLWC) Foundation.
The Gabriel Fernandez Memorial Scholarship honored high school seniors and college students.
The $1,000 scholarship recipients are Cristina Medina of Bishop Alemany, and Dongni Zhao of San Fernando High School. The $500 scholarship recipients are Valerie Amezquita of Vaughn Next Century Learning Center, and Jocelyn Casillas of San Fernando High School Science/Technology/Math Magnet.
Samantha Rosales of the University of California, Berkeley, Helen Avila of Sylmar High School, Monica Gonzalez of Vaughn International Studies and Marcell Acosta of Van Nuys High School received $250 scholarships.
In addition, two additional San Fernando seniors — Nury Hidalgo, Cesar Chavez Learning Academy – Social Justice Humanitas, and Antonio Gallardo Jr., San Fernando High School Science/Technology/Math Magnet — were awarded $1,000 scholarships for their essays from Republic Services.
All recipients will be honored at an awards reception on May 24.
