It was a sold-out crowd for “Viva la Tradicion! La Mujer y El Mariachi” at the Ford Theater on Sept. 25. Susie Garcia of Las Colibi paid tribute to the legacy of female mariachis, and her female mentor and mariachi pioneer, the late Laura Garcoacamp-Sobrino. A tribute was also paid to Juan Gabriel who recently passed away.
“It’s girl power all the way,” said Garcia, as an all-female cast of Mariachi musicians — Mariachi Femenil Nuevo Tecalitlan, Las Colibri, Flor de Toloache, Folklorico — and dancers — Ballet Folklorico Ollin and Folklor Pasion Mexicana — and a new girls’ youth Mariachi ensemble Las Jovencitas filled the stage.
