(top) Principal Rene Ramirez (center) of Arminta Elementary School in North Hollywood officially dedicated the school’s new edible Learning Garden on Tuesday, Nov. 29. “The number one purpose is for the students to have healthy food and a healthy diet,” Ramirez said. “What we grow we eat.” The project took two years to bring to fruition, but the school began planting seeds on Oct. 16, thanks in part to soil provided by Kitchen Community. Besides food, Ramirez said, the garden can provide science education for students learning about insects, as well as a “quiet area” for people to go.  [bottom right] Second grade teacher Leticia Haro (middle) shows off some of the new, healthy vegetables to a student.
