LOS ANGELES (CNS) — More than 102,000 high school seniors applied for freshman admission to UCLA for fall 2017, marking the first time the number of applicants reached into six figures, university officials announced.
The UCLA applications represent more than half of the record-setting 171,449 applications received by University of California campuses statewide.
Of the 102,000 UCLA applicants, 63,400 are California residents, an increase of 7.8 percent compared to the previous year, according to UCLA. The jump is the university’s largest year-over-year increase in California applications.
Information was not yet available on transfer applications, the deadline for which is Jan. 3.
“We’re pleased to see the response from California students from all across this great state,” said Youlonda Copeland-Morgan, UCLA’s vice provost for enrollment management. “Our admission, outreach and financial aid staff have worked hard to ensure that students throughout California had the information they needed to decide whether UCLA is the right place for them. And, overwhelmingly, they chose to apply.”
Prospective students who applied will be notified of admissions decisions by April 1, and admitted students will have until May 1 to decide whether they actually intend to enroll.
Across the nine-campus UC system, 111,600 of the 171,449 applications came from California high school seniors, a 6 percent bump over the previous year. The UC system has set a goal of enrolling an additional 10,000 California students over three years.
“This year’s applications affirm, once again, that Californians’ demand for a UC education keeps getting stronger,” UC President Janet Napolitano said. “This is a testament to the excellence of California’s public research university, and reinforces the imperative to continue working with our state government to preserve UC’s quality and affordability, and to ensure there is a place at the university for every deserving California student.”
