Fifth-grader Bowen Quan, left, from Pacoima Charter Elementary, uses his math skills to take precise measurements and calculations in effort to advance in the fourth annual Rally in the Valley competition.

Nearly 400 students from a dozen Los Angeles Unified School District schools took over the Matador Gym at Cal State University Northridge on May 6 to compete in a daylong tournament to show their high-tech skills in coding, robotics and engineering. The elementary students and their creations were challenged by an obstacle course, follow-the-line, “space” challenges and “sumo” matches where robots went at it in combat. Students from Pacoima Charter, Canoga Park, Hart Street, Plummer and Victory Boulevard elementary schools were among the contestants.
