Jorge Casas

A preliminary hearing date for a former LA County Sheriff’s deputy accused of killing his wife has been postponed.

Suspect Jorge Casas, 37, appeared in the San Fernando Courthouse on Monday, May 15, to have a preliminary hearing date placed on the court calendar. Instead, Casas will return to court on June 29.

Casas faces one count of murder in the stabbing death of his wife Deseret Favila, 33, who was killed on Jan. 19 in the couple’s home. He remains in custody in lieu of a $2 million bond.

Police and sheriff’s deputies went to the couple’s home in the 1000 block of Griswold Avenue in the City of San Fernando in response to a 9-1-1 call at 2:55 a.m. for a “medical emergency, possible assault” on Jan. 19.

Favila was treated for stab wounds by first responders, but was later pronounced dead at the scene. Casas was in the residence when police arrived; he was detained, questioned, and was booked later that day on suspicion of murder. The couple’s three children, ages 4, 6, and 8, were also in residence when police arrived, but were unharmed. According to police, they did not witness the murder.

Casas worked as a sheriff’s deputy for nearly two years before resigning in 2006 for “personal reasons,” according to department officials.
