William “Bill” Olson recently celebrated his 100th birthday at a party given for him at the Alicia Broadous-Duncan Multi-Purpose Center in Pacoima.
Olson, who was born in Minot, North Dakota on Oct. 19,1918 and was the youngest of seven children, was brought to California with his family in 1921. He grew up in Los Angeles, and enlisted in the Army in 1943, serving as an engineer. He was part of the Normandy Beach Landing in France in 1944 during World War II.
Olson was married twice. His second wife, Luella, stayed with him 40 years until her death in 1991. They had a son, Glen, who helps take care of his father who resides in Arleta.
He remains active with a passion for bowling, a sport Olson didn’t start participating in until 1980.
