The San Fernando Police Department (SFPD) has increased the numbers of officers on patrol in an effort to identify motorists suspected of operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The increased patrols, which began on Dec. 13, will continue through the first weekend of January, 2020.

“During the holiday season, we want everyone to enjoy time with friends and family safely. Unfortunately, some people will choose to drink and will drive while impaired,” said Police Chief Anthony Vairo.

“Given the many transportation alternatives that are available, there is no excuse to drink and drive. Please select a sober driver so everyone can enjoy a safe and festive holiday season.”

Vairo adds that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana can also impair, especially in combination with alcohol and other drugs.

Funding for the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
