Kathia Hernandez, a senior at the Cesar Chavez Learning Academy – ArTES (Arts, Theatre Entertainment) Magnet School in San Fernando, was named the 2021 winner of the Congressional Art Competition.
Congressman Tony Cárdenas (D-29th District) announced Hernandez as the winner on Saturday, April 8, during a virtual art show.
As the winner in the California’s 29th District, Hernandez will receive travel to Washington, DC to see her artwork — “Skating Summer Days,” displayed in the Capitol.
Second Place: Rokshana Bushra, “Bauler Gaan” (Song of the Baul), Senior at Van Nuys High School. 
Third Place: Noely Lopez, Overwhelmed, Sophomore Bert Corona Charter High School.
The other entries from Rokshana Burhra, Noely Lopez, Geraldine Suniga, and Rainiella Santos will be displayed in Cárdenas’ Panorama City office.
Fourth Place: Geraldine Suniga, Ideal Paradise, Junior at Daniel Pearl Magnet High School. 
Fifth Place: Rainielle Santos, Reminiscence, Sophomore at Van Nuys High School.
“Our community is filled with talented young artists just waiting to be discovered,” the congressman said, after announcing the winner.
“I want to thank every student who participated this year. Art is not simply a reflection of who we are, but it is also a tool that we use to build our minds. Education in the arts leads to success in other subjects, and I hope this competition reminds students, teachers and parents of the importance of investing in the arts.”
