LOS ANGELES (CNS) — Christmas has come and gone, and it’s time to start thinking about disposing of that drying-out Christmas tree.
Los Angeles residents are being urged to recycle their trees so they can be turned into mulch and compost. Last year, the city’s Christmas Tree Recycling Program collected almost 100,000 trees, and the resulting mulch was distributed to residents or used by city crews for landscaping.
The first recycling option is to use a city-issued green bin, provided the tree’s decorations are removed and it is cut into pieces to fit in the bin.
Another option is to place the tree at the curb during collection day, or to drop the tree for recycling at one of 10 designated fire stations.
Residents can also drop off their trees at one of two mulching facilities: Lopez Canyon Environmental and Education Center, 11950 Lopez Canyon Drive, Sylmar; or the Harbor District Yard, 1400 N. Gaffey St., San Pedro. The facilities are open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Residents can also go to one of six recreation and park locations on Jan. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Los Angeles County will also provide curbside Christmas tree recycling for its unincorporated area residents through Jan. 14.
Residents can recycle trees by placing them curbside on regular trash collection days, but trees over six feet should be cut in half for easier collection.
