If you and your family are considering acquiring and raising chickens, or want to learn better ways to care for them, LA Animal Services has a program with you in mind.
On Aug. 4, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., a free public workshop entitled “Backyard Chicken Keeping” will be presented at the East Valley Animal Services Center in Van Nuys.
“This workshop is geared towards anyone living in the Los Angeles area who has an interest in or who currently has a flock of chickens,” said Kelly Rutkowski, founder of Adopt a Bird Network, which is a co-sponsor along with LA Animal Services and PoultryDVM.
“We will be covering the basics of chicken care, such as housing, predator protection, and nutrition, as well as going over the City of LA regulations for poultry.”
You can learn about different breeds, the basics of chicken care, disease and injury recognition and prevention tips, as well as troubleshooting common chicken related problems. There will also be information regarding local laws regarding backyard chickens, and adopting birds from animal shelters and rescues.
You can even learn tricks to teach your birds.
The workshop is open to all ages.
