Before the Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) board meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 13, hundreds of GUSD teachers wearing red rallied to demand fair wages and keep teachers in the district. The Glendale Teachers Association (GTA) – which has over 1200 members – organized the “Rally for Respect” to push GUSD to accept their years-long contract negotiations. Speakers pointed out that the neighboring school districts of Los Angeles and Burbank offer more competitive salaries and that many GUSD teachers can’t afford to live in the district. The GTA wage increase proposal will cost an additional 17 million, which they say can be taken out of the 49 million new dollars the district receives each year. “Put it in the line item that says employee wages and sign off on offers,” concluded a GTA leader to cheers from the crowd and chants of “fair deal now!” (SFVS/el Sol Photo/Semantha Raquel Norris)
