NORTHRIDGE (CNS) – A man who was shot by Los Angeles police after allegedly pointing a handgun at officers in Northridge was identified by authorities Wednesday.
The suspect, 28-year-old Romario Iraheta, was wounded in the shooting about 7:45 p.m. Sunday in the 9300 block of Corbin Avenue, according to the LA Police Department.
Officers had responded to a report of a man with a gun outside a business in the 20000 block of Prairie Street, LAPD Public Information Officer Tony Im told City News Service.
“As an LAPD air unit arrived over the call location, they observed the suspect on a skateboard, attempting to flee, and directed responding officers to [his location],” police said in a statement. “Iraheta continued to flee, and a foot pursuit ensued, during which he pointed a firearm at officers, resulting in an officer-involved shooting.”
There was no word on how many shots were fired at the suspect or if more than one officer discharged their service weapons.
Although wounded, Iraheta continued to flee before stopping and being taken into custody, police said. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition and later booked in absentia on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer with a firearm, according to police.
No officers or bystanders were injured.
A black steel handgun with a loaded high-capacity magazine was recovered at the scene, police said.
The LAPD’s Force Investigation Division was handling the ongoing investigation.
