In 1957, StylesVille Barbershop and Beauty Salon in Pacoima welcomed its first customer. More than 68 years later, it’s the oldest Black-owned barbershop in the San Fernando Valley, and was designated as a Historical-Cultural Monument. The recognition is part of the ongoing African American Historic Places, Los Angeles (AAHPLA) project, a collaborative effort between the city and the Getty Conservation Institute to identify and celebrate historic and cultural contributions by African Americans to LA’s heritage. The plaque unveiling was held Oct. 11, where lead barber and manager Gregory Faucett and his grandmother, Ollie Carter, were joined by other dignitaries, including LA City Councilmember Monica Rodriguez.
