Los Angeles City Councilmember John Lee announced a $300,000 investment to install more than 50 new solar-powered streetlights around several residential intersections in Granada Hills to improve neighborhood safety and visibility.
The installations, which began Oct. 31, will take place at Tribune Street and Lindley Avenue; Tuba Street and Lasaine Avenue; Dempsey Avenue and San Jose Street; and Ruffner Avenue at Armstead and De Celis Place.
These areas have been impacted by repeated incidents of copper wire theft, which have left many streetlights dark and neighborhoods vulnerable. The new solar-powered lighting systems will operate independently of the traditional electrical grid and use theft-resistant materials, reducing both the risk of wire theft and the cost of long-term maintenance.
“Every neighborhood deserves well-lit streets where families feel safe walking at night,” said Lee. “Granada Hills has seen far too many instances of copper wire theft, and this investment is about restoring a basic sense of security and peace of mind for our residents. We are also looking at smarter, more sustainable ways to keep our streetlights working and protect public infrastructure from theft and vandalism.”
This effort is part of Lee’s broader push to strengthen local infrastructure and improve the quality of life across his district through initiatives like the Street S.M.A.R.T. program, which repairs broken sidewalks and removes long-neglected tree stumps.
