Taft High Receives $145.7 Million Investment To Improve Facilities, Enhance Sports Program

Officials from Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and members of the Woodland Hills community recently broke ground on a $145.7 million investment that will modernize facilities at Taft Charter High School.

These investments are part of Los Angeles Unified’s goal of creating 21st century learning environments. Taft’s comprehensive modernization project is one of 22 projects that will take place at schools across the District. 

“On behalf of the entire Taft Charter High School community, we are beyond grateful to the taxpayers, the Los Angeles Unified School Board, our parents and everyone responsible for making this happen,” said Taft Charter High School Principal Daniel Steiner.

“This is a historic moment for Taft Charter High School and a game changer for our physical education classes, our athletic programs, marching band, spirit squads and the entire student body.”

The investment includes the construction of several new state-of-the-art facilities, including a competition-sized synthetic track, a softball field, annex building, home bleachers, scoreboard, restrooms, elevators and bridges. 

“This project has been a long time in the making—and I’m proud of the advocacy, teamwork and planning that has brought us here today,” said LAUSD Board Vice President Nick Melvoin.

“There are so many outstanding programs at this school, and it’s exciting to break ground on a new campus befitting the quality of the Taft community.” 

“What a wonderful celebration this is,” said interim Superintendent Megan K. Reilly. “The entire Taft Charter High School family and surrounding community will benefit from these safety upgrades to classroom buildings, a new annex building, football and softball fields and other major improvements.” 

The project will include seismic improvements to several key facilities, including the school’s multipurpose room, industrial arts facility and administrative building.

Six classrooms will receive HVAC and plumbing upgrades and funds will also be dedicated to site improvements, including upgrades to the school’s interior, exterior, utilities, lighting and security. This project is expected to be completed in spring 2026. 

“We are thrilled to see this level of investment at Taft Charter High School,” said Local District Northwest Superintendent Joseph Nacorda. “This important modernization project will allow Taft to provide world-class facilities and programs that will benefit both our students and our community.”
