City of San Fernando residents looking to participate in fee-based recreational programs but who are unable to afford the cost can receive financial assistance through the Recreation Scholarship Program (RSP).

The city’s scholarship program was established by the San Fernando City Council on July 1, 2022. The program provides eligible applicants scholarships that cover 50% of the cost for all recreational programs offered by the Recreation and Community Services Department, including those for youth, adults and seniors.

“A lot of our residents have been taking advantage of the scholarship and [are] registering their children for a lot of our activities, and it is very helpful, especially during the summer camp,” said an employee working at San Fernando Recreation Park.  “For families who have more than one child that they want to register for camp, it does benefit them quite a bit. … So we do see more people coming in and applying for it.”

To be eligible, applicants must be a resident of the city, complete a self-certifying form and provide a San Fernando water bill with proof of residency – this can include a utility bill, a photo ID or a driver’s license.

The scholarship program technically has an end date of July 1, but it can be renewed for the next fiscal year. Applicants interested in the program can sign up either at San Fernando Recreation Park or Las Palmas Park.
