Matthew Alexander Gonzalez fatally struck a utility pole and spun out of control while speeding in the City of San Fernando on New Year’s Day.

The San Fernando Police Department (SFPD) have identified the driver involved in a fatal accident in the early morning hours on New Year’s Day.

Matthew Alexander Gonzalez, 31, of Granada Hills was killed in a car accident that occurred near the intersection of 4th Street and Park Avenue in the City of San Fernando around 5:45 a.m. SFPD Chief Fabian Valdez previously told the San Fernando Valley Sun/el Sol that the driver hit a utility pole and spun out of control. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

SFPD Detective Sgt. Pete Aguirre said that they have not received a toxicology report as of press time, so it’s currently unknown if Gonzalez was under the influence. However, he did say that speeding was a factor “based on the extent of the damage to the vehicle and to the property that he collided into.”

It had been raining around that time, which Aguirre said was a contributing factor, but the primary factor to the accident was Gonzalez traveling at high speed.
