A shooting outside a recreation center in Santa Clarita last Saturday, May 30, left one person critically injured and killed Joshua Trujillo, the son of Rudy Trujillo, a popular pastor who has ministered to many families who have lost children to drugs and gang violence.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) deputies have detained a person of interest and an investigation is ongoing.
Reports indicate there were at least 14 shots fired outside of the George A. Carvalho Sports Complex in Santa Clarita – where a quinceañera was being held – at about 10:50 p.m.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered two men seriously injured from gunshot wounds – Joshua Trujillo and a man reported as the boyfriend of Joshua Trujillo’s ex-wife.
Both men were transported to a local hospital, where Joshua Trujillo was pronounced dead. The boyfriend remains hospitalized in critical condition, according to the LASD.
Numerous shell casings were recovered by investigators. Several party guests were kept inside the building for several hours. Families including young teenagers were reported to be visibly distraught. One father who spoke to the media said he told his kids to duck for cover when the gunfire began.
This tragedy has caused much concern for local communities. Rudy Trujillo, known as “Pastor Rudy,” and his family have been part of the fabric of the Northeast Valley for decades. He had just been released from the hospital when the shooting occurred and he was told his son had died.
Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to contact LASD’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those who prefer to remain anonymous can provide information to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.lacrimestoppers.org.
