The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is encouraging Californians to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their loved ones from expected summer and fall surges in COVID-19 activity, which have happened yearly since 2020.

“As COVID-19 activity rises each summer, and our kids are getting back to school, getting vaccinated is one of the strongest ways we can protect our families and keep our communities thriving,” said Dr. Erica Pan, CDPH director and state public health officer, noting the vaccine has been proven safe and effective in preventing serious illness and death in children and adults.

“By staying up to date on your vaccine, you’re choosing health, resilience and the freedom to enjoy the season with confidence,” added Pan.

For protection against severe illness, hospitalization and death, all Californians six months of age and older should be protected with the COVID-19 vaccine, especially higher-risk individuals, including infants, toddlers, pregnant individuals and others who are at-risk for serious disease.

In addition to providing protection against possible infections, COVID-19 vaccines can minimize symptoms if infections do occur, allowing people to return to their daily activities more quickly.

The CDPH recommends that anyone who hasn’t received the 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccine, or who is due for a second dose, should get vaccinated now as infections start to rise. The COVID-19 vaccine for the 2026-2027 season will arrive later this year. 

Some groups, including young children and immunocompromised people, may need multiple doses. Individuals who are 65 or older should receive two separate doses six months apart.

In addition to getting vaccinated to help reduce infections, the CDPH also recommends staying home when you’re feeling sick; wearing a quality mask, such as an N95 or KN95; washing your hands throughout the day with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds; using hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol in between handwashing; and covering up your coughs or sneezes.

The COVID-19 vaccines will be covered for most people through their health insurance plans, including Medi-Cal and regular health care providers. Those having difficulty obtaining vaccines can contact their health care provider or local health department to locate a provider.
