The Hollywood Reporter once again named California State University, Northridge’s (CSUN) Department of Cinema and Television Arts (CTVA) one of the “Top 25 American Film Schools.”
CSUN climbed to No. 20 on the acclaimed film trade magazine’s annual 25 Best U.S. Film Schools, moving up one spot from last year. The ranking places CSUN above every other film program in the CSU system. CSUN stands out for its affordability, with one of the lowest undergraduate tuition rates on the Top 25 list and the lowest among California schools.
CTVA Department Chair Jared Rappaport said the latest ranking reinforces the exceptional work by students that the college’s faculty sees every day.
“CSUN provides a world-class, career-launching entertainment education that remains uniquely accessible,” Rappaport said. “Being the top-ranked California State University program highlights our commitment to bridging higher education directly with the media industry.”
The Hollywood Reporter highlighted several programs that connect CTVA students with the entertainment industry. Among them is a comedy script writing mentorship program led by CSUN alumnus and television producer Dave Caplan, a writer and executive producer of ABC’s “The Conners.” The program gives six screenwriting students from underserved backgrounds the opportunity to work alongside professional writers as they develop their original scripts.
“What truly drives this ranking is the exceptional work of our students and alumni, supported by hands-on opportunities – from industry partnerships with Lionsgate and mentorship initiatives,” Rappaport said. “Our graduates do not just learn the craft; they enter the workforce prepared to lead, innovate and shape the future of film, television and emerging media.
CSUN is also home to the California State University Entertainment Alliance, an initiative that connects CSU graduates with opportunities throughout the entertainment industry.
Another direct connection to Hollywood for the Matadors comes through a motion picture and television production accounting course created with Lionsgate. The 2026 ranking also noted $3 million in support from The Golden Globe Foundation, adding to the resources available to CTVA and its students.
The Department of Cinema and Television Arts, part of the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media and Communication, brings extensive professional experience to classrooms for striving filmmakers. The faculty bring opportunities and their expertise that will support students in achieving their goals.
