Dos Británicas son Atacadas por Cocodrilo en Sur de México

CIUDAD DE MÉXICO (AP) — Dos mujeres británicas se están recuperando luego de haber sido atacadas por un cocodrilo en una laguna de la costa sur del Pacífico mexicano, informó el miércoles un funcionario.

Las dos mujeres, quienes aparentemente son hermanas, visitaron la laguna de Manialtepec, cerca del destino turístico de Puerto Escondido, en Oaxaca, cuando fueron atacadas por un cocodrilo el domingo por la tarde, de acuerdo con Said Silva, el director de la oficina local de protección civil.

La laguna es conocida por sus manglares y por sus aguas salobres donde se presentan fenómenos de bioluminiscencia en algunas épocas del año.

Los testigos dijeron a las autoridades que las dos británicas estaban nadando cuando una fue atacada por un cocodrilo, de acuerdo con Silva. La segunda mujer resultó herida luego de que trató de ayudar a la otra.

“Ha de haber sido un animal pequeño, porque si fuera grande, (ella) no habría salido a la superficie”, comentó Silva, cuya oficina responde muchas veces al año a reportes de cocodrilos que ingresan a zonas ocupadas por humanos en los alrededores de la laguna.

La BBC reportó que las mujeres son las gemelas Melissa y Georgia Laurie, de 28 años, quienes habían estado haciendo labores de voluntariado y viajaban por México.

Hana Laurie, la hermana mayor de las gemelas, comentó a la cadena que ambas estaban nadando cuando el cocodrilo tomó a Melissa y la arrastró hacia abajo.

Dijo que Georgia “empezó a pegarle” al animal para salvar a su hermana y luchó contra él cuando volvió a atacar.

“Georgia le pegó varias veces al cocodrilo luego de que volvió en tres ocasiones para atacar, mientras que sus amigos fueron por ayuda”, según publicó en Facebook.

Georgia había sido dada de alta de un hospital, señaló Hana, pero Melissa seguía en condición crítica debido a que sus heridas se habían infectado y presentó sepsis.

Silva señaló que, debido a que es temporada de lluvias, los turistas pueden haberse topado con una hembra que defendía su nido. “Puede ser que se sintió atacada”, comentó.

Hana Laurie escribió que el guía que las llevó a la laguna al parecer no contaba con una licencia y operaba de manera ilegal.
