SAN FERNANDO (CNS) – A 30-year-old man pleaded no contest to punching his 3-year-old German shepherd and could face up to three years behind bars.
Mohamad Taghavi entered his plea to one felony count of animal cruelty.
An allegation that he used a metal chain leash as a deadly weapon was dropped as part of the plea deal, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Taghavi is set to be sentenced Oct. 8.
Prosecutors said Taghavi punched the dog, Kaiser, multiple times and struck him with a metal chain leash while at a food truck in Castaic on Sept.10. Taghavi also yanked on the dog’s chain after he tried to hide under the truck, causing the animal to whimper.
The dog owner was arrested that day by sheriff’s deputies. Kaiser was placed under the care of the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care.
