LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Mayor Eric Garcetti joined the mayors of New York, Houston and 30 other cities in support of President Barack Obama’s executive action to defer deportation of millions of people in the country illegally.

The president’s action is being challenged in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas by several states and governors.

Obama’s immigration order would allow 3.7 million parents of U.S.-born and resident children, as well as another 1 million or more immigrants who arrived illegally as children, to apply for work permits and conduct legal transactions.

“Our residents, economies and municipal budgets directly suffer the consequences when federal immigration reform is stalled,” Garcetti said. “Moving forward with these reforms is a human and economic imperative, and we’re united to make sure this important policy moves forward.”

The mayors who signed the brief include Bill de Blasio of New York, Annise Parker of Houston, Ed Lee of San Francisco and Francis Slay of St. Louis.
