National Champion — Rafael Delgado Jr., 14, a Birmingham High student, proudly displays some of the championship belts he has won as an amateur boxer. The latest belt, draped around his shoulders, was earned at the National Silver Gloves Tournament in Independence, MO, when Delgado defeated Dominque Francis of Opa Locka, FL to win the boys’ novice (ages 14-15) 112-pound division. Delgado, one of five children to Rafael Delgado and Sylvia Navarro of Van Nuys, is now preparing for a Jr. Olympics boxing event in April.
