VAN NUYS (CNS) — A transient has pleaded no contest to attacking and hurling racial epithets at an Latino postal worker as she was delivering mail in North Hollywood.

Charles Thomas Miller, 61, pleaded to one count each of battery and misdemeanor criminal threats. He was immediately sentenced to time served and four years probation.

The original criminal complaint included a charge of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury. That charge was dismissed Oct. 5, following a preliminary hearing of the evidence.

Miller, who has a 1978 conviction for robbery, was arrested Sept. 19 and released on Dec. 7.
