Two men who helped a stranger who had collapsed on the streets in Northridge were honored for their efforts by Dignity Health-Northridge Hospital Medical Center, and also met the man they saved.
E. Javier Cruz spotted the man — later identified as Steve Overton — on the ground and in need of help. Cruz went to the victim and began CPR while asking others passing by to help. Christopher Henney stopped, called 9-1-1, and also assisted with CPR until paramedics arrived.
Hospital officials said that without the aid of Cruz and Henney, Overton might not have survived.
Both rescuers received a special “Act of Humankindness Award,” alongside Overton and the firefighters who were at the scene.
