LOS ANGELES (CNS) — Vivian Ekchian, who was serving as acting Los Angeles Unified School District superintendent while Michelle King has been on medical leave, has been appointed interim superintendent in light of King’s plans to retire without returning to work.

King announced on Jan. 5 she is being treated for cancer and plans to retire by June 30, but she said she would not be returning to work.

King has been on medical leave from the district since September.

The district Board of Education met in closed session and announced that Ekchian was being tabbed as interim superintendent while a search is conducted for someone to fill the post.
