SAN FERNANDO (CNS) — A Sylmar resident arrested last week after barricading himself for hours inside a San Fernando Valley home has been charged with fatally shooting a young man at a park in Sylmar, along with other crimes.
Salvador Sanchez, 36, is accused in the May 28 killing of 21-year-old Sergio Tabares, who was shot to death at a park at Borden Avenue and Polk Street, where his body was discovered about 9:30 that night.
Police reported shortly after the shooting that a few people knocked on the door of a local fire station and said there was a man on the ground who appeared to have been shot.
Sanchez is also accused of assaulting a 14-year-old girl with whom he allegedly had a sexual relationship, according to Deputy District Attorney Julie Kramer.
In addition to the murder count, Sanchez is charged with one count each of injuring a girlfriend, assault with a deadly weapon and making criminal threats, four counts of assault with a firearm and seven counts of committing a lewd act on a 14-year-old child.
The charges include allegations that Sanchez used a shotgun as a deadly weapon and inflicted great bodily injury under circumstances involving domestic violence, according to the prosecutor.
Sanchez was arrested following a lengthy standoff with police at a Sylmar home, and has remained behind bars since then.
If convicted as charged, he faces a potential maximum sentence of more than 100 years to life in state prison, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
