In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (SGRHO) — a historic African American sorority committed to public service — will partner with Magnolia Public Schools to present the “25th Annual Youth Symposium,” for students grades 5-12.
The event, hosted by the Kappa Nu Sigma chapter of SGRHO, will take place Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Magnolia Science Academy-7 in Northridge.
The partnership was created by Ja’Niece Allen, a Magnolia physical education teacher and member of the Kappa Nu Sigma Alumnae chapter of SGRHO.
“I am beyond blessed to be involved with a group that is able to provide additional resources to students I currently serve,” Allen said.
“We are a group of women who believe that the only way to make progress as a society is through our service to one another. The Youth Symposium is an example of how we live our motto of ‘greater service, greater progress.’”
The symposium offers a full day of educational sessions to students from throughout the San Fernando Valley.
During the event, attendees will receive a hot breakfast and catered lunch, participate in learning workshops with dedicated mentors, enjoy hands-on and fun activities including a community service project, and have opportunities to win prizes. In addition, the symposium will count toward their school community service hours requirement.
Afterward, the students will enjoy a shopping spree experience where they can select free school supplies at an SGRHO onsite resource store.
“We are beyond grateful and excited for our new partnership with the Valley Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority,” said Principal Meagan Wittek.
“This partnership means new opportunities and resources for our students, as well as relationships with current college students and alumni who can help build upon our college and career focus by working with, mentoring, and guiding our students,” Wittek said.
Although the event is open to all students from neighboring schools in grades 5-12, participants are required to sign up for the free event online via an Eventbrite link. Space is limited; the first 100 students to register are guaranteed admission.
Attendees will need to show proof of vaccination or a negative antigen test before arriving at the school site. Antigen tests are also available onsite.
