Sylmar clinched the City Section Division 1 championship Saturday, May 27, at Dodger Stadium beating Kennedy 1-0 off an RBI by junior Victor Carrera in the bottom of the seventh inning. Not since 1980 has Sylmar won this championship. Head Coach Raymond Rivera attributed the win to the team’s work ethic and coachability. “These guys have come in since day 1 of the offseason last summer and continued to work. They pushed each other and have completely bought into our style of play. This was just a perfect ending to what they started.” When the San Fernando Valley Sun/el Sol caught up with Coach Rivera on Tuesday, he and the team were on their way to regional playoffs.
