The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced today that select offices in the greater Los Angeles area will offer REAL ID appointments on Saturday, May 17, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Appointments are required, and only REAL ID services will be available during this time. Other DMV services will not be offered.
“Even though the federal enforcement deadline has passed, the DMV will continue to offer REAL IDs to Californians who want one,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon. “We’re making it easier for customers to upgrade by offering additional weekend appointments.”
Those who do not have a REAL ID can comfortably wait to upgrade when their driver’s license is due for renewal. In the meantime, they can use a federally accepted document, like a valid passport or permanent resident card, to fly domestically.
The federal government started enforcing the REAL ID Act on May 7. It requires people to show a REAL ID or another approved federal document, such as a current United States passport, to board domestic flights and access secure federal facilities. Californians can continue to apply for their REAL ID after the enforcement date.
The offices listed below will open on Saturday by appointment only:
- Fullerton (909 W. Valencia Drive)
- Glendale (1335 W. Glenoaks Blvd.)
- San Clemente (2727 Via Cascadita)
- Riverside East (6425 Sycamore Canyon Blvd.)
- Thousand Oaks (1810 E. Avenida De Los Arboles)
- West Covina (800 S. Glendora Ave.)
Californians should visit REALID.dmv.ca.gov to start their REAL ID online application and upload their documents. Customers must visit a DMV office and bring physical copies of their uploaded documents to complete the application. The DMV strongly encourages customers to make an appointment and complete the online application beforehand to help reduce wait times.
