For many people, Halloween is their favorite holiday. For kids, it’s about the free candy collected while trick-or-treating. But how did this tradition get started?

Halloween traces its roots back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated on October 31st, which marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that on this night, the boundary between the living and the dead was blurred, allowing spirits to return to Earth. But for most people, Halloween is just a lot of spooky fun, a time to decorate their homes with scary props like these homes in San Fernando and Lake View Terrace, and an excuse to wear a costume.
