A suspected murder-suicide attempt at a residence on the 14600 block of Rex Street in Sylmar has left one person dead and one hospitalized in critical condition, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

“This does appear to be a very isolated incident, just between the family. We’re currently not looking for any additional suspects,” said LAPD Lt. Guy Golan from the Robbery-Homicide Division of the department’s Valley Bureau. The victims are believed to be a married couple in their 50s. Their two teenage children were both in the home at the time of the shootings.

LAPD officers responded to a call about a possible suicide in the residence around 7:15 a.m.

“The teens heard the confrontation [between the parents] and the gunshots, and then they called police,” said Golan. “We believe everybody was in the house at the time [of the incident], but there were no eyewitnesses to the events.

“When they reached one of the restrooms, they found two victims suffering from possible gunshot wounds. [The husband] appeared to be deceased, and the [wife] was unresponsive, but still breathing,” he continued. “We believe the deceased [man] is the suspect in a murder-suicide.”

The wife was transported to the hospital, where she currently remains in critical condition.

Although the investigation is still ongoing, Golan said there doesn’t appear to be a record of police calls from the residence. The names of the victims have not been released, pending notifications to next of kin.
