Arleta residents, students and others connected to the neighborhood came together on Saturday, March 7, for a community cleanup that launched an annual initiative to bring neighborhood beautification events to every area across Council District 6.
The Arleta cleanup marked the first in a series of community cleanups planned throughout the district, part of a broader effort by Los Angeles City Councilmember Imelda Padilla’s office. District 6 includes Arleta, Lake Balboa, North Hollywood, North Hollywood, North Hills, Panorama City, Sun Valley and Van Nuys.
The event was held in partnership with Victory Outreach San Fernando Valley, which served as the staging site for the work crew who donated their time and labor.
Volunteers from Arleta High School, Canterbury Avenue Elementary, Branford Park, Arleta Neighbors In Action, the Arleta Neighborhood Council and the Arleta Community Garden removed litter and cleaned up neighborhood streets.
“Community cleanups are about more than keeping our neighborhoods clean; they are about building a sense of ownership and teaching the next generation that they have a role in caring for their community,”Padilla said.“When young people see neighbors, schools and community organizations working together to improve our neighborhoods, it instills a sense of pride and responsibility for the places we call home. The Arleta cleanup is the first step in a year-long initiative to bring community cleanups to neighborhoods across Council District 6, building a culture of stewardship and community care throughout the district.”
Additional support was provided by Victory Outreach SFV, Arleta Neighbors In Action, the LA Beautification Team, Republic Services, the Office of Community Beautification, the LA Department of Sanitation and the LA Department of Water and Power.
Additional community cleanups will be held throughout the year in neighborhoods across Council District 6.
