An array of entertainers will present a night of music, comedy and more on Tuesday, May 12, to kick off the California countdown toward the midterm elections and raise funds to help win back the U.S. House of Representatives for Congressional Democrats, said an event organizer.

Dubbed California Rising, the upcoming concert will be held at the El Rey Theatre in the Mid-Wilshire neighborhood of Los Angeles, and will feature artists Rufus Wainwright, Lisa Loeb, Iman Jordan, Laurence Juber and Richard T. Bear, with special guests Jean Smart, Andy Richter, Allison Gill, Dana Goldberg and John Fugelsang. The doors will open at 7 p.m.

Event proceeds will benefit the Blue Wave California Victory Fund to support Democratic candidates in four key Congressional races in California, including districts CA-13 and CA-22, which are both located in the Central Valley, and CA-45 and CA-48, both in Orange County.

The goal of the event is to help Democrats win back the majority in the House, according to Steve Pierson, executive director of Blue Wave California, a non-profit PAC (political action committee).

“We wanted to do something that would bring in people who care about our country – who are worried about the direction that we’re heading in, but who don’t normally engage in political fundraisers,” said Pierson.

By attending the concert, he added, “they can make an impact, but also have a great time.”

The May 12 event is being presented by a coalition of multiple organizations, including Women’s March Action, Swing Left, California Environmental Voters, Grassroots Democrats HQ, People For the American Way, LA County Democratic Party and Westside Democratic HQ.

The El Rey Theatre is located at 5515 Wilshire Blvd., near the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA). For more details or event tickets, go to: www.BlueWaveCalifornia.org/Concert.
