The LA County Board of Supervisors honored lifelong journalist/news editor Diana Martinez and singer-songwriter Lupita Infante this week in celebration of Latino Heritage Month.
“They are both telling our stories,” said Supervisor Lindsay Horvath, “one in the newsroom and the other on stage. They are both the fabric of Los Angeles.”
For decades, Martinez has worked in newsrooms of every size – in both public and commercial media outlets and has opened doors and continues to work during a challenging time for newsrooms and journalists. She is noted for providing coverage and access for diverse communities and giving a voice to those who often aren’t provided access to media coverage.
As the editor for The San Fernando Valley Sun/el Sol, she has provided editorial guidance, with its publisher, to build an essential award-winning community newspaper that is still honoring its legacy of printing for 122 years. The paper is available in newsracks, and continues to grow a wide readership with a significant online audience.
Martinez was also honored by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) as a Distinguished Journalist of the Year in 2025.
Infante, granddaughter of the legendary Mexican singer and actor Pedro Infante, is carrying her family legacy while carving out her own fan base and accomplishments as a Grammy-nominated artist.
