North Hollywood High School won third place at the National Science Bowl competition held in Washington, D.C., demonstrating extraordinary scientific knowledge and teamwork against more than 65 high schools from across the country.
“Congratulations to North Hollywood High School on their well-deserved win, where they demonstrated their commitment, passion and knowledge,” said Janisse Quiñones, LA Department of Water and Power (LADWP) CEO and chief engineer. “It’s important for LADWP to connect with and inspire the next generation of leaders in a meaningful effort that supports initiatives that help shape and build the future workforce.”
The National Science Bowl, organized by the United States Department of Energy, is among the nation’s largest science-based academic competitions and the only one sponsored by a federal agency. Since its inception in 1991, more than 325,000 students have participated in the program.
North Hollywood High faced tough competition – Montgomery Blair High School from Maryland emerged as the overall champion and Lexington High School from Massachusetts secured a second place finish.
The first place team won $5,000 for their school’s science department. The second-place team will also receive $5,000 and the top 16 teams each receive $1,000 for their schools’ science departments. The North Hollywood High winning team members are Connor Zhao, Connor Chang, Mingao Guo, Suzuko Ohshima and Charles Huang.
