This past week, despite a temporary restraining order issued by a federal judge and upheld by the United States 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, random immigration enforcement actions are once again taking place across Los Angeles.
In response, a broad coalition of civil and immigrant rights, legal, labor, faith and community organizations is calling for a strike with 24 hours of non-violent community action to call for a stop to President Donald Trump’s terror on immigrant communities.
Starting at midnight, actions today, August 12, will be led by organizations including the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN-LA), the Garment Worker Center and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and others.
The coalition is demanding a stop to the immigration raids, the end of the military occupation of LA, the end to local law enforcement collaborating with federal immigration agents and to “Free Our Families, Free Them All.”
The peaceful “Community Stoppage” will be made up of several rallies throughout the day, a breakfast and march around MacArthur Park, a car caravan from the park to downtown LA, an evening rally and march to the Metropolitan Detention Center.
The public is encouraged to engage by not purchasing from corporations such as Home Depot, Walmart, Target or fast food restaurants, joining any of the rallies and supporting local businesses and street vendors.
Actions taking place throughout the day are:
- 12 a.m. – First fast-food restaurant workers’ walkout from fast food restaurants near MacArthur Park. A second walkout is expected at 5 a.m.
- 6 a.m. – “Take Back our Park” coffee and breakfast by Skid Row Coffee, on the corner of Park View and Wilshire Boulevard.
- 10 a.m. – Rally at MacArthur Park, followed by a march around the park
- 12 p.m. – SEIU 721 leads a caravan from MacArthur Park to the Board of Supervisors building in downtown LA
- 5:30 p.m. – Rally at Placita Olvera
