Arroyo High School in the City of San Fernando – previously Cesar Chavez Learning Academies (CCLA) – started the 2026-2027 school year with its new name clearly displayed on the school’s outdoor digital marquee.
Above Arroyo High’s main entrance, the physical signage bearing the school’s former name has been removed, but it hasn’t been replaced by a new sign featuring the updated name yet.
The Los Angeles Unified School District’s Board of Education formally approved “Arroyo” as the school name in June, two months after the school community, local residents, and area employees and business owners submitted and voted on new name suggestions for the campus. The winning name is a reference to the street where the school is located – Arroyo Avenue.
The district previously announced it would continue to change the physical signage and logos across campus to reflect the school’s new name, but didn’t provide a timeline for completion.
Arroyo High’s website has also transitioned to a new web address – https://arroyohs.lausd.org – though a web search of the former CCLA title still connects to the school’s updated homepage.
The decision to change the school name was one of multiple swift actions taken after reports surfaced in March with claims that Chavez had sexually abused women and minors. March 31 – which previously honored Chavez’s birthday – will now be recognized as Farm Workers Day.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2156, officially renaming the holiday.
In addition, dozens of statues of Chavez have been taken down across the country, including in the City of San Fernando. A bronze statue that was at Cesar Chavez Memorial Park, near the corner of Wolfskill and Truman streets, was removed just two days after the allegations made national headlines.
