CHATSWORTH (CNS) — A man allegedly responsible for a hit-and-run crash that killed two bicyclists in Chatsworth has been taken into custody, authorities said.

The crash was reported at about 7:10 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Plummer Street and Lurline Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

A man and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene, the LAPD reported. Their names were withheld, pending notification of their relatives. An officer at the scene said police believe the victims were “transients.”

The motorist was arrested when the truck he was driving crashed near Knapp Street and De Soto Avenue, police said. His name was not immediately released. He sustained injuries from the second collision, and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Investigators who initially spoke to media outlets said police had not yet determined whether the suspect motorist was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or was driving at a high rate of speed.

“It’s an ongoing investigation. This has multiple legs, 3-4 different traffic collisions involved,” an investigator said.
