PANORAMA CITY (CNS) — A man shot and killed his common-law wife in front of their children before turning the weapon on himself in Panorama City, police said Saturday, August 2.
Seven children, aged 1-19, were present inside the apartment on the 8700 block of Tobias Avenue at the time of the 10 p.m. shooting, Los Angeles Police Lt. Paul Vernon said.
The couple had one of the children in common, a 10-year-old son, Vernon said. Of the seven children, a pregnant 19-year-old daughter, 1, 3 and 4-year-olds were the children of the victim, with the 13- and 16-year-old sons of the suspect also present, Vernon said.
The victim was 41, and the suspect was about the same age, according to Vernon.
The suspect had at least five beers and then got into an argument with his wife, texting a friend that he was going to kill himself, then calling the same friend to say he was going to kill his wife as well, the lieutenant said.
The friend heard yelling and gunshots as he arrived at the apartment to remove his friend. The first shot was at the victim, Vernon said, and the second was self-inflicted, at which point the boyfriend of the victim’s pregnant daughter pushed the gunman outside.
He killed himself with a shotgun blast to the head, Vernon said.
Police found a sawed-off shotgun next to the husband’s body, he said.
The identity of both the victim and suspect have not been released.
