Arleta pulled off a nice escape job at Eagle Rock, sneaking off with a 21-20 victory. Now the Mustangs (1-0) entertain El Camino Real for their home opener, a game important to both teams because it could have ramifications regarding City Division I playoff seedings.

It will also be interesting to see if the Conquistadors, playing their first game this year, will display a more diversified offensive attack instead of just leaning heavily on its Double Wing-T running game. ECR has a strong-armed quarterback in returning starter Adam Blythe; it also has a smaller roster (30) than in years past, and may not be capable of just pounding on teams.

Arleta quarterback Jonathan Porter has already demonstrated a flair for the passing game, completing 21 of 42 passes for 344 yards and three touchdowns against Eagle Rock. He was intercepted three times, however, and doesn’t want to continue that pattern.

The kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Arleta.
